What is ROM?
ROM stands for Read Only Memory, Folks your operating system is running on your ROM. ROM is a part of a hardware on your Android. There are two forms of ROM and they are Stock ROM and Custom ROM.
What is Stock ROM?
This is where the manufacturer pre-installed some of the unique software on their handsets in addition to normal Android operating system.
The main advantages of stock ROM are,
It separate each handset manufacturers based on the unique features of different software
It keeps the warranty since most of the manufactures do not allow rooting of their handsets.
What is Custom ROM?
This is a customized Android. This is maintained by community and some of the contributors but originally it provided by Google or mobile vendors. Custom ROM is differ from the original source code.
The main advantages of custom ROM are,
You will be able to update your phone with newest version of Android. If it's stock ROM you need to wait until manufacturer to release the newest version.
Root access is a must for custom ROM and with the custom ROM you will be able to customized your handset to maximum. Additionally you can uninstall manufacturers unique software so that phone has so much resources to play with. Therefore your handset will much smarter and quicker.
What is Rooting?
This is Jail breaking for Android. This will define you as the super user. The super user will be having full access to change Android system. You will be able to install different types of software and customize the handset.
